  • Measure U Summer 2016 Projects Underway

CUSD Keeps it Local with Carpinteria-based Contractors

CARPINTERIA – The Carpinteria Unified School District has broken ground on five projects funded by Measure U; the general obligation bond generously passed by the voters of Carpinteria and Summerland for facilities improvements. These five projects are categorized as “quick start” projects and are anticipated to be completed by the time the students return to school in late August.

    • Canalino Elementary School – Multipurpose Room Interior Upgrades
    • Carpinteria Middle School – Multipurpose Building Roof Replacement
    • Carpinteria High School – Roof Replacement for Classroom Wings C & G
    • Carpinteria High School – Roof Replacement for Upper Gymnasium
    • Carpinteria High School – ADA Site Improvements – Walkway Replacements Phase 1

Unlike most of the other Measure U projects that are larger and more complex, “quick start” projects do not require approval from the Division of the State Architect and can be constructed during the summer months. The selection of these projects is based solely on that criteria. It is of utmost importance to CUSD to keep campuses safe and operational throughout the life of Measure U. Whenever possible, it is the District’s intent to take advantage of implementing projects during down-time when staff and students are not on campus.

Contractors are hard at work to complete these projects over the next few weeks. Of the five contractors selected, two of them – Shaw Contracting, Inc. and EJS Construction, Inc., – are Carpinteria-based companies and both owners, Jeff Shaw and Paul Sanchez, respectively, are CHS alums. Superintendent Micheline G. Miglis stated, “We’re thrilled to award nearly 50% of the total construction contracts for this round to firms right here in Carp, putting the community’s tax dollars back into the local economy. The fact that these are two of our own is very gratifying.” The remaining projects were awarded to companies located in Santa Barbara and Oxnard.

“These five projects, totaling $1.5 million in construction costs, represent the beginning of a long line of tangible and visible outcomes of the first bond issuance of Measure U,” said Micheline G. Miglis, Superintendent. “We look forward to sharing this with our community, without which none of this would be possible.”

Please note: Carpinteria Unified School District awards construction contracts to the lowest responsible bidder utilizing an open, competitive process as required by Public Contract Code.
